Instant Spring!

Spring has finally made it to the Southern Hemisphere and to celebrate here is a pretty photo of a cherry blossom tree taken with my instax mini camera. Instax minis are like a mini version of a polaroid and print out lovely credit card sized photos small enough for your wallet but big enough to cheer you up after a long winter. Best of all they conquor my short attention span!

Unfortunately these pint sized picture makers are very hard to come by but like anything these days you can find them online!

If you're lucky enough to have a friend visiting, live in, or are going to Japan get them to pick up one of these babies. They cost around $30-$60(AUD) over there and of course pick up a bunch of film as well.

Flickr has a great instax mini group, be inspired by instax mini!

To the Victor Premiere

About a week ago I took photos for my good friends at kujoland films. It was their big premiere night for the short film "To the Victor". This was my first "in a club/bar" social pictures experience but I think they turned out okay!

macaroons

My current obsession is macaroons. They take very cute pictures, cute enough that you want to reach out and bite into them! With this photo I set up a small little "studio" with a desk lamp, set the macaroon in a white plate, used a white chopping board for the background and turned on the main light in my kitchen. I'm happy with the final shot as it's nice and soft and a little blurry which is what I like.

Inspiration: Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette.

Holgarise

Digital cameras are pretty much the norm when it comes to our photographic habits. As much as I LOVE the freedom to take as many digital photos as I like, share them instantly with my friends & delete them if I'm not satisfied there truely is nothing like the anticipation of waiting for your roll of film to be developed at the photo lab.

Lomo cameras like Holga have taken on a cult following. The cheeply made plastic cameras take 120mm film (which basically means they come out in a funky sqaure format) and because they ARE so cheap light will often leak into the film leaving you with nifty glowy streaks of light. For some this could be frustrating, but for others -like me- it just adds to the uniqueness of the photo and also makes things look very arty and cool!

I received my first Holga camera from some work colleagues in Japan. They also gave me an awesome fish eye lens. Here are some of my own holga snaps, scanned for your digital viewing pleasure of course ;)
Tips:

  • Don't forget to take your lens cap off!
  • To prevent the back of your camera falling off and exposing your film tie a giant rubber band around it
  • Don't look for an LCD screen. There is none.
  • Take a photo, then another and another without winding the film between shots. This will create a cool overlapping effect like these ones

High Vibes

Street festivals & festivals in general are a Melbourne past time. You know Summer is on its way when the festival season begins. One of the first street festivals of the year is High Vibes-a massive street party held annually on the main street in Northcote. Bands, street vendors, performers & young hipsters line the pavements. With a glass of cider in one hand, my camera in the other and music in my ears I was ready to capture the event.

Melbourne Spring Fashion Week

A fashion shoot on the street and the Forever New show on Bourke Street. I decided to be a little creative with my shots at this show. I also edited the colours and tones a little with i-photo. I usually don't like to edit my photos but decided to play around this time and I'm quite happy with the results. Also, for fun here is a view of the show from an unusual angle...

And a lemon tree?
